The most anticipated one-on-one showdown between two of golf’s biggest stars has a date (or a weekend at least).
Tiger Woods will face Phil Mickelson in November at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg reported Thursday. The winner-take-all match will take place on either Nov. 23 (Friday) or 24 (Saturday) of Thanksgiving weekend, and the purse is $10 million.
“It’s a ridiculous amount of money,” Mickelson, who has a net worth of $375 million, told Golf.com last month. “No matter how much money you have, this amount will take both of us out of our comfort zone.”
The broadcast event will offer a special feature, as the two can show off their trash-talk game, agreeing to wear microphones during the match.
“You will hear a lot of the comments that you don’t hear on regular TV,” Mickelson said. “We both like to talk smack, and we both have fun with what we’re doing. And the fact that this isn’t an official tournament, that it’s just a head-to-head match, you’ll hear some of the little nuances, some of the little things that you don’t normally pick up.”
The top two active earners on the PGA tour are competing in this week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational that began Thursday at Firestone. A sometimes-contentious relationship between Woods and Mickelson has thawed in recent years.
Mickelson currently sits in 10th place of the Ryder Cup standings while Woods is 20th. Both players are expected to be captain’s picks if they fail to rank in the top eight automatic qualifying spots. Woods is a vice captain for 2018 captain Jim Furyk and is fighting for one of the four at-large picks.
For Woods, this will be a Thanksgiving to remember, after having his Thanksgiving to forget nine years ago, when he ran away from then-wife Elin Nordegren and crashed into a fire hydrant and tree.
